The Great Outdoors

photo no. 23 walking photoWalking/Randonées

One of the great attractions for the visitor is the range of walks throughout this beautiful area. Grand Randonnée routes (GR) dissect the countryside from north to south. From the village of Léran there are at least 4 significant walks as well as the easier stroll through the village. The mountains to the south contain walks through the Pyrénées and its foothills. We have a wide selection of maps and guides which are graded from family rambles to walks which will challenge the truly serious enthusiasts.photo no. 23a walking

Equestrian rides

There is the possibility to explore this area on horseback. Horses can be stabled, or use those offered by a number of certified equestrian centres, including Philippe Labeda who has a successful riding school and stables in Léran. You can even take guided trail rides, locally or further a field through the high Pyrénées.

Guided rides and bike hire is also available in the village through "Velomondo". We have information and maps on some of the rides using Léran as your base. We welcome bike riders and can provide secure storage for bikes.

Climbing – caves and underground rivers.

From the heights to the depths

For the climbing enthusiast, or for the beginner, abseiling is possible at Roquefixade. This area is close to a number of significant caves, the most famous being the Grotte de Niaux which has 13,000 year old cave painitings. Please note that reservations for guided tours are essential and these tours are conducted in either French or English. The underground river at Labouiche is one of the largest underground systems in Europe. Not for the claustrophic!
